NOTICE OF THE DATES OF THE CLOSED SEASON FOR THE COMMERCIAL BLACKLIP ABALONE FISHERY AND NOTICE OF ABALONE FISHERY CLOSURE TO SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

I, Will Joscelyne, Acting General Manager (Marine Resources) in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, acting pursuant to a delegation from the Minister administering the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (the Act) hereby determine under rule 9 of the Fisheries (Abalone) Rules 2017 (the Rules):

  1. That the dates of the closed season for that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 are from 12:01 am 15 June 2024 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2024; and
  2. That the part of the abalone fishery specified in schedule 1 is closed to, or in respect of, the activities specified in schedule 2.

SCHEDULE 1

All that part of the commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south-west coast of King Island within an area bounded by an imaginary line running from where the line of longitude 143° 56’ 27.23” East meets the high water mark at Middle Point then running due south to the line of latitude 40° 15’ 28.95” South, then running due west to the line of longitude 143° 42’ 44.54” East, then running due north to the line of latitude 39° 52’ 29.56” South, then running due east to the high water mark near King Island Airport, then following the line of high water generally south to the point of commencement.

SCHEDULE 2

While on a commercial fishing trip in State waters for the purpose of taking blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) the holder of a fishing licence (abalone dive) must not enter the water by swimming or diving.

All coordinates of latitude and longitude specified in this notice are to be determined by reference to the Geocentric Datum of Australia (also known as "the GDA" or "GDA94") as defined in the Commonwealth Gazette No. GN 35, 6 September 1995.

Any expression used in this notice having a particular meaning under the Act or the Rules has the same meaning in this notice.

The commercial blacklip abalone fishery in State waters off the south-west coast of King Island is being closed from 12:01 am 15 June 2024 to 11:59 pm 31 December 2024 as part of arrangements to control the total amount of blacklip abalone harvested in this area in the interest of resource sustainability. This closed area relates to commercial blacklip abalone fishing in fishing sub-blocks 3A, 3B and 3C only.
